Having acheived a considerable coup with “Live!”, Bob returned to the
studio for his next album, full of songs that would be entirely new to
his now burgeoning white audience, even if some were familiar to
Jamaican listeners. The spirit of the album was very different from
that of “Natty Dread”, the previous studio set, less upbeat and more
mellow. The album produced the classic song “War”. Again the album was
record at Harry J’s but this time Joe Gibb’s studio’s in Kingston was
also used.

Musicians: Bob Marley, Aston Barrett, Carlton Barrett, Tyrone Downie,
“The I-Threes”: Rita Marley, Marcia Griffiths and Judy Mowatt, Alvin
Petterson, Earl Smith, Don Kinsey, Al Anderson, Tommy McCook, Glen Da
Costa and David Madden.

Positive Vibration

Bob declares arguements are prayers to the devil. A nice way to start
the album. This track was also used to open shows, always a great way
to start the show off and no different here on the album.

Roots, Rock, Reggae

Roots, Rock, Reggae borrows a couple of lyrics from “Rainbow Country”
here. It seems as though this is an appeal from Bob to the US music
business, with the line “Play I on the R&B” asking to be a part of the
US black radio programming.

Johnny Was

“Johnny Was” offers a lyric about a son’s death. The story behind the
song is that a Jamaican ghetto rudie is show in the street leaving his
mum wondering where she went wrong, “Wondering how she can work it out
/ Now she knows that the wages of sin is death / Gift of Jah is life”.
Bob seems to be implying that if the kid had been brought up a Rasta
none of this would have happend. The man in question is rumoured to be
Carlton Wilson, brother of singer Delroy, though there is no hard
evidence to confirm or deny this. The song was only played live once
at Tower Theatre in 76, and after listening to it, it makes you wonder
why, as it was such a great performance.

Cry To Me

Again Bob returns to the mid 60′s era. This time with a cover of the
Wailers song from 1966. A great “Cry To Me” acoustic version of this
song is featured on “The Complete Wailers 67-72 Part3 Box Set”. A must
have song.

Want More

A slowbeat onedrop examines greed and jealousy. Some great guitar work
from Don Kinsey is featured. Another one of my favourite songs,
especially live.

Crazy Baldhead

With the banshee wail at the start, Bob is again in militant style.
Lyrics were taken from The Wailers track Freedom Time (circa 1967) and
reworked into Crazy Baldhead. The song was segued into “Running Away”
during live concerts, which like War/No More Trouble made sense.

Who The Cap Fit

Who The Cap Fit is a remake of an obscure Wailers single “Man To Man”
(1971). Bob sings: “Your worst enemy could be your best friend / And
your best friend your worst enemy”.

Night Shift

Another reworking of an old song this time It’s Alright (1970/71). The
song casts Bob as a forklift driver he is refering to his days working
nights at The Chrysler motor plant in Delware, USA 1966, combined with
a warehouse job operating a forklift which he took in the city.

War

Another Marley classic. The lyrics were taken from speech from Emperor
Haile Selassie’s UN 1968 speech. This album version doesn’t quite seem
to have the fire & fierceness of the live performance. This was sequed
with No More Trouble in concert, producing a wonderful song. Bob felt
strongly ebough to make this an anthem.

An interesting note is that the album version is missing 30seconds and
an extra verse, the demo includes the extra 30 seconds and why the LP
version is missing the extra verse is a mystery and crime. It enhances
what is already a powerful and classic track. The missing verse is as
follows:

“Until bigotry and pejudice, malicious,
inhuman self-interest,
Have been replaced by understanding and tolerence and good will,
yeah, war,
Until all Africans stand and speak as free beings,
Equal in the eyes of The Almighty, war, everywhere is war”

Rat Race

The closing song on the album is another gem. “Rat Race” examines the
arms race and finds it a Rat Race. Mentioning collective security on
the road of sudden destruction. Bob declares that “Rasta dont work for
no C.I.A”.
